HDMI Forum, Inc. has officially announced HDMI Specification Version 2.2, a significant update aimed at advancing high-speed data transmission in next-generation displays and audio-visual equipment. This new version introduces enhanced bandwidth capabilities and a new certification feature named Ultra96, designed to help users select compatible HDMI cables.
HDMI 2.2 supports up to 96 Gbps bandwidth, utilizing the latest Fixed Rate Link (FRL) system. The upgrade ensures smoother video and audio delivery across multiple formats, enabling seamless performance even in data-heavy applications like AR, VR, MR, spatial computing, and high-end signage solutions. The update also introduces the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), developed to reduce synchronization delays across audio systems, including AV receivers and soundbars.
To identify HDMI 2.2-compliant hardware, HDMI Forum introduces the Ultra96 label. Devices bearing this label must support 64, 80, or 96 Gbps bandwidth. Certified Ultra96 HDMI Cables—specifically engineered to handle these speeds—are required for full compatibility. Each cable undergoes length-specific testing and is officially labeled under HDMI’s certification program. This new cable class replaces the previous Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, which was limited to 48 Gbps.
Ultra96 branding will appear across HDMI ports, setup manuals, display screens, packaging, and product marketing materials to ensure clarity and ease of use for consumers and integrators.
The HDMI 2.2 update brings broader format compatibility and higher frame rate support for both uncompressed and compressed content. Key visual upgrades include:
* Uncompressed resolutions of 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz with 10- and 12-bit color depths and full 4:4:4 chroma sampling.
* Compressed output support scaling up to:
* 4K at 480Hz
* 5K at 240Hz
* 8K at 240Hz
* 10K at 120Hz
* 12K at 120Hz
* 16K at 60Hz
These advancements ensure a robust experience for high-performance display environments, including gaming, cinematic installations, and precision imaging systems.
Additional HDMI 2.2 Enhancements
Other notable features in HDMI 2.2 include:
* Support for Dynamic HDR and Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM).
* Enhanced gaming with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Quick Frame Transport (QFT), and Quick Media Switching (QMS).
* Expanded audio capabilities via Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) and latency management through LIP.
Ultra96 HDMI Cables are slated to reach the consumer market by the third or fourth quarter of 2025.
